4 Gifts for Data Privacy Day

Alex has your last-minute shopping ideas for Data Privacy Day

January 28th is Data Privacy Day across the globe. As we shift more rapidly into capturing digital information about our personal tastes, characteristics, and medical details, conversations continue to growth on the appropriate and productive use of this information by governments, corporations, and the general public to further social communication, societal good, and corporate growth.

I'm sure by 2015, Data Privacy Day will surpass Halloween in terms of worldwide expenditures, with it overtaking Christmas in 2020.

However, I'm sure you are thinking, Oh, no! I didn't know today was Data Privacy Day! I didn't get my loved ones anything! And who am I supposed to give a gift to anyway?

Never fear. We here at IBM have been shopping for you.

Fortunately, the most beneficial gift for your beloved is information and education. Here are 4 things you can share with them, all of which ship for free:

  1. HIPAA - As part of the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act in 1996, specific laws were enacted about the sharing of health information that required the patient's consent. Although many healthcare groups are required to follow these laws and many others are attempting to follow those regulations, you might be surprised at the entities that do not fall under the true definition.
  2. Cookie Tracking - Many websites use "cookies" to track online behavior, and the extent of this tracking sometimes shifts beyond what you may desire. But you can manage how much information you expose & many browsers are growing in sophistication on this front. Learn how.
  3. Facebook - It's true. This is not a problem for me. I am (along with your dog and a parakeet in San Francisco) one of the few remaining folks not on Facebook. My wife shares the important information with me anyway. But if you are, double check your privacy settings so you’re sharing only what you want.
  4. Financial Information - I'm suspect you've received plenty of letters from different financial services corporations around privacy. Finally, the Federal Trade Commission has specific rules on what you are required to share vs what you are not.

On Data Privacy Day, sharing thin information with your beloved can be your best gift. Happy shopping!
